Saturday, July 19, 2008 will go down in the history of social football at MASM as a day to remember. It was the day MASM men's social football team proved that they are a force to reckon with on the domestic social football scene when they won gold at the seven-aside Samaritan Trust tournament which took place at Green Corner Off-Chikwawa Road. To a good number of the players, this was their first ever football medal and as such is considered priceless. The tournament saw, among others, KPMG, Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) and Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL) fall along the way.
The now indomitable MASM Socials swept aside Plastico in the finals emerge as champions. Chancy "the menace" Munde emerged as overall top goalscorer with eight goals to his credit. Captain Mayah got injured in the first game against RBM and watched the rest of the tournament from the sidelines. Manager Jose Evalisto and his assistant Grant Kawonga [fondly known as Aginte] made sure the team understood the seven-aside soccer rules which were slightly different from the normal game of football. Bennet Tambala, Bvumbwe, Mulli, Unkhankhu, Raphael, Moses Mbowe, Gogo and Kayi Mlenje were all there to inflict their part of the damage on the opposing teams.
The year 2008 has seen MASM men's socials enjoying a rich vein of form since acquiring a new set of football attire and equipment. Teams like KPMG, BNL, Indebank, John Hopkins, Carlsberg Breweries and Pricewater House Coopers, among others, have fallen prey to the indomitable MASM Socials. On the other hand, recently, MASM women wishing not to be left out have also formed a social netball team aka Manyana-Manyana which has so far butchered FMB's Makwacha twice. Unlike the men's side Manyana-Manyana is blessed with the presence of the big ones like Dorika Chirwa (Operations Manager) and Linda Mapemba (Property and Administration Officer), who are part and parcel of the squad. The star players are Charity Tembo, Sabina Kachale, Melvis Galanje, Joanna Kalonga and captain Bettie Siyani. The manageress is Maureen Kalima. Watch out for the two MASM teams!
